India's textile history dates back thousands of years, with techniques like hand-weaving, block printing, and embroidery passed down through generations. The availability of diverse textile craftsmanship in different states of the country creates a unique wealth of innovation for the country. The diversity of handicrafts found in India unites the indigenous artisan community of the country and thereby creating a powerful creative outlet.

The decline of traditional artisanal communities in India is a pressing concern, evidenced by several alarming statistics. Over the last three decades, the number of traditional artisans has decreased by approximately 50%, with many communities struggling to sustain their craft. According to the 2011 Census, about 5 million artisans were identified, a significant drop from previous decades.Furthermore, a report from the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) highlights that 85% of artisans lack access to modern markets, limiting their income potential. Additionally, a survey by the Crafts Council of India indicates that 70% of artisans are under the age of 35, suggesting a lack of interest among younger generations in continuing traditional crafts.

These figures underscore the urgent need for supportive policies and initiatives to revitalize these communities, preserve cultural heritage, and ensure sustainable livelihoods for artisans across India. The textile sector provides livelihoods to over 45 million people, primarily in rural areas. By Supporting local textiles sustains jobs and reduces urban migration, bolstering rural economies. It is crucial to support the handloom villages to maintain the traditional legacy of the craft and to maintain the livelihoods of the artisans.
